About the Project

No Hesitation is a personal take on 100 Days of Rejection Therapy - the idea that deliberately seeking rejection is the fastest way to drain fear of its power. The challenge: make 20 asks you'd normally talk yourself out of.

The goal isn't more yes's. It's to make rejection feel boring - to repeat the experience until the ask becomes automatic and the fear response stops firing.

Below are the 20 asks. Tap the ones marked Done to read what actually happened. Use the generator below to build a personalized list based on where you want to push.

  1. Ask a restaurant to name a limited-time menu item after you Done

I meant to ask them to name a menu item after me, but after walking into my local Bruegger's I asked for a sriracha honey sunrise bagel instead. Too nerve wracking. It feels conceited to ask someone to name a menu item after you.

I think trying this at Culver's, where they have a daily special, seems more reasonable. Will attempt again.

  2. Ask a barista to step behind the counter and teach you latte art Done

Ordered a latte with honey. Told the barista I just got an espresso machine and wondered if she could show me how to make some latte art. Perfect timing - no one else was waiting. She didn't miss a beat and walked me through creating what she called a "dot" (pictured).

Takeaways: don't fully submerge the frother wand - keep it toward the top to allow airflow and slowly move it down. It shouldn't bubble, it should whirlpool. Tap to get bubbles out. When pouring milk, start from higher; when adding the actual art, keep the milk close to the cup.

Latte art attempt Misfit Coffee shop where I learned latte art
  3. Ask a stranger to plan your entire day (and actually follow it)
  4. Ask a thrift store if you can style their window display
  5. Ask a car salesman for a sales tip Done

Called Tesla. I lied and said I was starting a photography business and wanted a sales tip. This guy was super helpful and enthusiastic. He kept it short and sweet.

The tip: to sell, be a subject expert. Build trust and understand persuasion. It shouldn't feel like a sale - it should feel like a conversation.

  6. Ask a group if you can join their plans for the next hour
  7. Ask to shadow someone in a job you're curious about
  8. Ask someone to introduce you to the most interesting person they know
  9. Ask to sit in on a meeting/event you're not technically invited to
  10. Ask a local business if you can help them with something in exchange for learning
  11. Ask a content creator if you can help shoot/edit one piece with them
  12. Ask for a behind-the-scenes tour of a place (restaurant, studio, etc.)
  13. Ask someone to critique your work live, in person
  14. Ask a local news station or blog to feature a story/experiment you're doing
  15. Ask to give a short talk or presentation somewhere
  16. Ask to be interviewed on a podcast
  17. Ask a brand if you can create content for them for free
  18. Ask a public speaker/event host if you can open for 2 minutes
  19. Ask strangers to participate in a social experiment you film
  20. Ask a business to let you run a mini-event in their space
